Ladakh is moving ahead with plans for a massive cricket stadium near Leh that could become one of the highest-altitude cricket venues in the world.
The proposed Ranbirpur Cricket Stadium is planned at an altitude of around 11,800 feet, offering a major boost to sports infrastructure and tourism in the region.
₹100 Crore Stadium Plan Takes Shape
The proposed stadium will be located in the Thiksay/Ranbirpur area, around 19 to 20 km from Leh town. The project is expected to require an investment of around ₹100 crore to ₹116 crore and could accommodate nearly 40,000 spectators.
The Leh Public Works Department reportedly floated a tender in August 2026 to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR), marking an important step towards taking the project forward.
Stadium Could Set New Altitude Record
At nearly 11,800 feet above sea level, the proposed venue would stand around 3,800 feet higher than Chail Cricket Ground in Himachal Pradesh, widely regarded as one of India's highest cricket grounds at around 8,000 feet.
If completed as planned, the Ladakh stadium could gain a unique place on the global cricket map because of its extreme elevation.
Boost for Local Cricket
The stadium could create better opportunities for young cricketers in Ladakh by providing modern facilities for training, practice and competitive matches.
A large international-standard venue could also attract teams, professional players and cricket enthusiasts from across India, helping build a stronger sporting culture in the region.

Beyond cricket, the project is expected to support sports tourism in Ladakh. Hosting tournaments and sporting events could bring more visitors to the region while creating new opportunities for local businesses linked to tourism and hospitality.
Ladakh Expands Sports Infrastructure
The stadium plan comes as Ladakh continues to develop high-quality sporting facilities. Under the Khelo India initiative, a high-altitude AstroTurf football stadium has been built at Spituk, while an artificial ice hockey rink has also been developed in Leh.
The proposed Ranbirpur Cricket Stadium could add another major sporting landmark to the region, combining high-altitude sports infrastructure with new opportunities for cricket, tourism and local talent development.
